The jebena is such a precious and highly treasured buna making pot in any habesha household around the world. Our mothers protect it and get upset at us for playing around or being careless with it. The reason for that is highly due to it being handmade and the process it takes to make the first pot of coffee. Before the first brew, our moms have to season it by boiling water and adding coffee grounds & sugar in it and letting it simmer. We use the same boiled coffee and sugar mixture to massage the body of the pot to help prevent cracks in the pot. Clay pot heat is gentle so we don’t rush the boil. It is a long process that requires patience and attention. We use low-med heat to boil. We let grounds settle before each pour for a clearer cup. Even pouring the coffee is done slowly and carefully to ensure a clear pour. Our hearts are heavy hearing the passing of the beautiful former Miss Universe, TV host, and lawyer Cheslie Kryst lose her life to suicide. We are sending our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.

Mental illness, sadness, depression, and anxiety is VERY REAL in our Ethiopian and Eritrean community. The fact is that stigma and judgement prevent many people from our community to seek treatment. Research indicates that people of colour believe that mild depression or anxiety would be considered "crazy" in social circles. Furthermore, many believe that discussions about their mental illness would not be appropriate, even among family.

Now it is OUR DUTY as Berchis to not just empower and motivate you but to also encourage you all to hold safe spaces for yourselves, for your friends, and for your loved ones. Spaces that allow you to just BE! BE happy, BE sad, BE grieving, BE empowered, BE angry, BE unsure, to just BE. But BE together and hold spaces for eachother. Make that call, send that random text, arrange that group facetime or zoom call. And when you do, just BE. ደህና አለመሆን ያለ ነው. ደህና አይደለሁም ማለት ብልህነት ነው. Its okay to not be okay. Listen, 2018-2020 I was happy securing the bag 💰and focusing on my career I had ZERO intention of getting married or having kids.… then on 11/28/2020 I met the man I was destined to marry. God said “Let 👏🏽me 👏🏽MOVE 👏🏽in 👏🏽your👏🏽 life!!“, HE made all my dreams come true.

✂️ 💉🩺 December 2018 I was told I had Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 3) a serious cell abnormality/dysplasia that is essentially cervical cancer. A genetic predisposition (I got tested for cancer genes), along with this discovery meant I had to undergo multiple tests, biopsies, and finally a removal of a LARGE area of cervical tissue which would make implantation/carrying a baby full term very difficult. I even went as far as freezing my eggs just in case somewhere down the line I would want kids.

As time went on, I really just accepted the fact that I couldn’t have kids, and that was something my husband and I had to talk about since he wanted children. We tried for some time, like with precision timing, syncing calendars, etc with no success.

First 💭 thought: nawwwww this can’t be right. There’s no way this is right! Then the tears 😭, then the waiting to find out if it’s even viable. Then a month ago finding out about complication that could’ve led to Congenital Heart Defect (God got that out the way too 🙏🏽)

I have other personal testimonies for how God has shown up in my life but this is one that I will continue to scream from the mountain tops, this is one that eradicated any doubt I have ever had in his mercy and love.

My God is a Powerful God!

I gave birth to our precious daughter supernaturally in water in a cozy birthing center.

It was fast and beautiful. The intense sensation of contractions and pushing is indescribable. I am so proud of myself for doing all that.

It is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I am empowered!

God designed our bodies amazingly, and I am still in awe.

Thank you ❤️❤️❤️ for our families, friends, and this community for your prayers and support.
